The United Nations Intensive Summer Study Program

The United Nations Intensive Summer Study Program will be offered from Monday, June 4 to Friday, June 8, 2012, by the John C. Whitehead School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University and the United Nations Foundation - United Nations Association of the USA.  Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this unique program immerses participants in the political dynamics of the United Nations. 

Students will attend official sessions at United Nations headquarters as well as briefings at UNA-USA.  Directed by Dr. Courtney Smith, Associate Dean at the Whitehead School, and Ms. Minh-Thu Pham, Director of Public Policy at the United Nations Foundation, the course is designed to familiarize students with the inner workings of the United Nations by bringing them together with distinguished practitioners working in the field of multilateral diplomacy.  The program is structured around a series of seminars led by U.N. officials and representatives of governments and civil society on a wide range of global issues currently on the U.N. agenda.

PhD & Postdoctoral Fellowships - Sustainable Development

The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) is now accepting applications for its three fellowship programmes: UNU-IAS PhD Fellowships, UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships, and JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships. The closing date for applications is 29 February 2012.  UNU-IAS is a multi-thematic, interdisciplinary, research and training centre located in Yokohama, Japan. The Institute's fellowship programmes provide young scientists, policy makers, and developing country scholars with the opportunity to expand their intellectual vision beyond a single scientific field.

UNU-IAS PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered for a period of 12 months beginning in September 2012. JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered for 24 months beginning in September 2012. Postdoctoral candidates must have completed a PhD degree, and PhD Fellowship candidates must be at the advanced stage of their doctoral dissertation. Candidates' current research must be closely related to one of the thematic areas of the Institute (see http://www.ias.unu.edu/sub_page.aspx?catID=6&ddlID=756 for more details).

UNITAR Series of e-Learning Courses on International Environmental Law

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is pleased to announce the new edition of the UNITAR Series of e-Learning Courses on International Environmental Law scheduled to run from 6 February to 30 March 2012.  The Series is composed of 4 courses which aim to provide a broad introduction to international environmental law, introducing its fundamental principles, law-making process, main actors, implementation and compliance procedures, and negotiation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements based on the current legal challenges in international environmental law.

  • e-Course 1: Introduction to International Environmental Law, 6 to 17 February 2012
  • e-Course 2: International Environmental Governance, 20 February to 2 March 2012
  • e-Course 3: Techniques and Procedures in IEL, 5 to 16 March 2012
  • e-Course 4: International Environmental Negotiations, 19 to 30 March 2012

The e-Courses on International Environmental Law require tuition fees; however the fee structure is designed for the participation of students from a wide range of countries. Thus, reduced fees are available for participants from least developed countries, developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

Call for proposals to the Persephone Miel Fellowship

The fellowship, overseen by the Pulitzer Center in collaboration with Internews, is designed to help media professionals outside of the United States do the kind of reporting they've always wanted to do, and enable them to bring their work to a broader international audience. The fellowship will benefit those with limited access to other fellowships or international distribution of their work. The deadline is February 15. The winner will be announced by March 15.

The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) welcomes applicants for its Master of Science in Environmental Governance with Specialization in Biodiversity programme. The programme draws on UNU-IAS's long-standing reputation for excellence in policy-oriented research for sustainable development. UNU-IAS provides students with the intellectual foundation and practical field experience necessary for understanding environmental governance regimes. Graduates of the programme will receive a Master of Science degree from the United Nations University and the skills necessary to forge new frontiers as researchers and practitioners with an interdisciplinary and systemic understanding of biodiversity, ecosystems and sustainable development. Summer Program in Washington and Geneva

Globalization and the changing architecture of global governance pose many challenges to governments and to other international actors. These challenges require scholars and practitioners to rethink the nature of global governance in contemporary international society and to find new ways of understanding multilateralism, international organizations, and rules and practices. The Program on International Organizations, Law and Diplomacy combines legal, diplomatic, and social scientific approaches to the study of multilateralism.

Security sector reform of the Guinea Defence Forces

Goal is to identify/develop a programme to be financed by the European Union in the future to support the Guinean Security Sector Reform. This programme should:
- Reduce Redundant Military Staff through Retirement Plan
- Facilitate the Socio-Economic Integration of Redundant Military Staff
- Provide Psycho-Social and/or Medical support to the Guinean Armed forces (to reduce violent behaviours).

Four experts needed, for a short term mission in February-March 2012:

1) An expert to deal with the retirement system in place for the armed forces - EXPERT in economic sciences (public finance preference), social sciences (demography), law, administrative science or actuarial science, or any other relevant academic qualification of master at least

2) An expert with experience in the reintegration in society of disadvantaged populations (military without qualification, street youth or children, children soldiers...) - EXPERT (possibly experience in the prison and correctional services) - Rehabilitation and Reintegration, Behaviour Change, Capacity Building & Vocational Training, Socioeconomic development:- social, political and economic, of the work, or any other relevant academic qualification of at least master level

3) An expert (doctor, psychiatrist, social worker...) with experience in working with populations who went through violent behaviours, mental health problems, use of toxic substances -  EXPERT IN PSYCHOLOGY / SOCIOLOGY - Post Conflict Trauma, Substance Abuse, Rehabilitation:- general medicine or psychiatric sciences doctor degree, diploma of psychology, anthropology, social sciences or other relevant academic qualification of master at least

4) A team leader, with one of the 3 expertise above - EXPERT social sciences, political or economic, law, science of work, in public financial management, human resources management, in science administrative or with any other relevant academic qualification of master at least

University of Washington Tacoma full time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences

The University of Washington Tacoma invites applications for a full time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences (IAS) with teaching/ research interests in International Studies. The position primarily contributes to an interdisciplinary major in Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) but also contributes to other interdisciplinary majors at UWT. The successful candidate will be broadly trained in international affairs, political science, geography, or related field. She/he will be expected to develop and teach a range of classes, including American foreign policy and a regional specialty in the Middle East, North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, or Europe. Experience and interest in teaching international development and/or gender politics in international relations are a plus. The position begins September 16, 2012, requires an earned doctorate at the time of appointment, and is contingent on funding. Nuclear Security Fellows Program

With the support of the Stanton Foundation, the Security Studies Program has launched a Nuclear Security Fellows Program for junior faculty as well as pre-doctoral and post-doctoral scholars. The Nuclear Security Fellows Program seeks to stimulate the development of the next generation of thought leaders in nuclear security by supporting research that will advance policy-relevant understanding of the subject.  With the support of the Stanton Foundation, fellowships are available for pre-doctoral and post-doctoral scholars and for junior faculty.  Fellows are expected to produce policy-relevant research, including book manuscripts, draft articles, dissertations, chapters in edited volumes, or reports.  Nuclear security is defined broadly to include nuclear terrorism, nuclear proliferation and nonproliferation, nuclear weapons, nuclear doctrine and force structure, nuclear energy as it relates to nuclear security, and other topics that involve nuclear security.

Call for Country Experts

I'm compiling a new dataset on the religious affiliations of presidents, prime ministers, etc., for every country from 1945 to the present. For each country, I'm looking for someone knowledgeable in its politics and government, to check the data I have now for accuracy and to help me fill in missing information. This should not take more than a few minutes per country for anyone with the right knowledge base.

Kennan Institute Offers Research Assistantships

The Kennan Institute at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars offers paid research internships for undergraduate, graduate, and prospective graduate students who are US citizens or permanent residents. Each intern works with a scholar in residence at the Institute over a period of three to nine months. Global Change, Peace & Security invites entries for the annual Routledge-GCP&S Essay Prize Competition

This competition is designed to encourage outstanding new contributions to research on practical and theoretical questions posed by a rapidly globalising world. It seeks to attract new research into the international dimensions of political, economic and cultural life, and into the contradictions of an increasingly integrated yet fragmented world. Of specific interest are entries that look at events and developments that reverberate beyond the confines of a particular country, and those concerning the sources and consequences of conflict, violence and insecurity, as well as the conditions and prospects for conflict transformation and peacebuilding. CTBTO Internships

The CTBTO offers a limited number of unpaid internships every year. Interns usually work on specific assignments. Opportunities for internships are available subject to the current needs of the individual Divisions within the CTBTO. Internships should not be shorter than three months and not longer than six months on a full-time basis. As the CTBTO cannot provide financial support for interns, all successful applicants are expected to make their own arrangements for travel, lodging, living expenses and insurance during the internship period.

Interested candidates who are under 30 years of age and are studying towards a university degree, or have already received a degree, should complete a Personal History Profile (PHP) accompanied by a letter of interest.
