Lecture given by Jean-Luc Lemahieu, Representative of the Unitetd Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Country Office in Afghanistan.

International conference organized by Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic in cooperation with EADI Working Group on Development Aid of the Non-DAC Donors. With the accession of the "new" member states to the EU in 2004 and 2007 and, for some of them, to the OECD in the preceding years, the mostly post-communist countries have begun or renewed their bilateral and multilateral cooperation programmes as well as defined their national position towards the EU development policy.

Almost a year after the Great East Japan Earthquake, thousands of people are still struggling to rebuild their lives and communities. This event looks at the human consequences of 11 March in comparison with other major natural disasters (such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the 2008 Sichuan earthquake).

The United Nations University Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS) will co-organize, with the Institute for European Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (IES-VUB), the Institut d’Études Européennes at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (IEE-ULB), and Egmont – the Royal Institute for International Relations, a conference on the European Union in international affairs in Brussels on 3–5 May 2012.

The conference will address interdisciplinary practices across the social sciences, and between the social sciences and the natural sciences, applied sciences and the professions. Law and power intersect at national and international levels, in a wide variety of forms.
