Abstract Peacekeeping, peacebuilding or crisis management operations are well-known activities of the so-called 'international community' in response to contemporary conflicts. These activities have gone through major evolutions since the end of the Cold War, echoing the simultaneous changes within the international system. From the UN-led humanitarian operations in the Balkans in the early 1990s to the EU-led missions in Kosovo or in the Gulf of Aden in 2009 or the NATO intervention in Afghanistan, it is not only the actors and the activities of crisis management that have evolved, but also the strategic environment in which they take place. This book deals with crisis management in the post-Cold War era, examining the nature and the evolution of its activities, actors, and the different challenges crisis management faces. The book looks in particular at the United Nations, the European Union, NATO, the OSCE and the African Union, and also at the role of NGOs and private security companies in peacekeeping and peacebuilding settings. It is of interest for political science and international relations students, as well as scholars and practitioners involved in crisis management policies.
