For the Rule of Law: Criminal Justice Teaching and Training Across the World
Kauko Aromaa and Slawomir Redo (eds.)

Abstract

This book is an attempt to make a targeted contribution to improving international criminal justice education and training at  the undergraduate/graduate and post-graduate level. It focuses on  programmes, projects or other initiatives (ideas)  that may contribute to a more effective and humane treatment of offenders and victims of crime, and to crime prevention.   In 2004,  the Secretary-General of the United Nations in his report to the Security Council stressed that articulating a common language for such concepts  as the rule of law, justice and transitional justice were essential  to enhance human rights, protect persons from fear, address property disputes, encourage economic development, promote accountable governance and peacefully resolve conflicts (S/2004/616, paras. 3-5).

The book looks into the modalities of delivering the rule of law message in academic and training settings, both through innovative classroom teaching and distance learning .   Its other purpose is to examine how best to promote the United Nations criminal justice standards and norms

The anthology seeks to facilitate networking, academic exchange, and capacity-building.   It has been compiled by ACUNS member Dr. Slawomir Redo  and contains contributions from other ACUNS academics, Jean Marc Coicaud (“Making the Rule of Law Work”) and Michael Platzer (“New Ways of Teaching Students”). There are other contributors from Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Costa Rica, Italy, Japan, Korea, Poland, United Kingdom, and the United States.   They are now thinking of developing  a common core criminal justice curricula, agreeing however that much can be learned fromdeveloping countries and that much will have to be adapted to local contexts.

Making persons aware of what is happening in different continents as well as the promotion of international criminal justice education worldwide are ultimate objectives of the book.

There are six substantive sections in this anthology. The general section deals with the challenging policy issues surrounding the topic of the rule of law , the relationships between security and justice issues  and   the practical delivery of the precepts of the rule of law. The second section deals with  innovative techniques for teaching across the world, beyond elite universities and capital cities, through distance learning. The third section deals with the same challenge but in a real classroom setting where successful experiences are  shared  with the reader. The fourth section describes the training experiences in various criminal justice academies in Europe and the United States. The fifth section addresses the substantive international criminal justice training and teaching agenda. The last section deals with training experiences in crime prevention, including cybercrime, thus taking the book back to the point where a virtual academy training becomes a top  priority.
